Which is better Botox or Filler?

Botox is best for lines and wrinkles which appear or deepen when you smile, laugh, frown or narrow your eyes – “expression lines”. Filler is better for visible lines or wrinkles when your face is expressionless.

This is helpful as a ‘rule of thumb’ but it’s always best to have a consultation. We can discuss in detail the best option for your treatment.

Why do you get wrinkles and lines?

When you smile, laugh, frown or narrow your eyes you will be using different muscles in your face. These will gather the skin near or around them, causing lines and wrinkles.

Usually they will disappear when you stop smiling, laughing, frowning or narrowing the lines. Also known as dynamic wrinkles. However, over time, and as part of the ageing process you lose collagen and elastin in the skin.

Collagen and elastin give your skin it’s flexibility and ‘bounce-back’. As collagen and elastin reduce, your skin doesn’t bounce-back to a smooth surface. Lines and wrinkles start to appear.

Over time the line and wrinkles will deepen as your body produces less collagen and elastin. Other factors will also affect or even damage your skin. Such as your lifestyle, what you eat, how well you sleep, and exposure to the sun.

The bottom line is, this is part of the natural ageing process.

What does Botox do?

Botox is helpful in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It also helps to smooth existing lines and wrinkles.

It does this by relaxing the muscles which pull the skin and create lines and wrinkles.

Botox is effective in areas such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes – particularly crow’s feet. It is used in other parts of the face and neck, but will require an assessment to see it’s the best option.

How do Fillers work?

Fillers add body, volume, and smooth lines and some wrinkles. Particularly in areas where lines and wrinkles can be seen when your face is expressionless.

As the name suggests, they fill the lines and smooth them out.

Fillers are used on areas such as:

  • around the nose
  • the cheeks
  • around the mouth
  • the lips
  • jawline

Can you use Botox and Fillers together?

This is something we would discuss at consultation. The short answer is – yes, you can have both. But it needs an assessment to see what treatments are needed.

How long does lip filler last?

Filler treatment for lips will last between 6 to 12 months. When used for treatments other than lips it can last a little longer.

How long it last for treatments of your lips will depend on a number of factors:

  • Type of lip filler used
  • How much is used for the treatment
  • How active you are

The last point may sound a little strange. Let me explain.

Lip and dermal fillers are made from a naturally occuring substance. It’s called hyaluronic acid, which is a sugar based substance, and is found in almost all living things.

You also have hyaluronic acid inside your body. It helps in transporting nutrients through your body. It also binds with water to acts as a shock absorber in your joints

The filler is slowly broken down by the body. If you have an active lifestyle the body will break down the filler a little quicker.

This doesn’t mean you should slow down, it’s just the way your body works!

What are fillers?

Fillers or dermal fillers are substances injected into different parts of the face. They’re used to fill lines and wrinkles, and add volume to areas such as lips and cheeks. They’re also used around the mouth, jawline, and between the eyebrows. Most fillers are made with a naturally occuring sugar based molecule called hyaluronic acid.

How long do fillers last?

A single treatment can last for 6 to 18 months. Filler treatment is not permanent and depend on:

  • type of filler used – there are several available
  • the amount of filler used for the treatment
  • whether it’s used for lines or wrinkles
  • whether it’s used to add volume to soft tissue such as lips and cheeks

How long the filler treatment last will vary from person to person. Different and personal lifestyles will also have an effect on how long it lasts.

How quickly do fillers work?

The results of the treatment are more or less immediate. You can see the changes to lines, wrinkles, and soft tissue during the treatment session.

You will see lines and wrinkles become fainter and the skin smoother. In other areas such as lips, you will also see instant change.

It will take a little time at the treatment session. This is to ensure the right areas are treated to get the best natural looking results.

What are fillers made of?

Dermal fillers are made with sugar based molecule called hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance found in almost all living organisms.

In your body, it links with water and helps lubricate parts of your body. It also acts as a shock absorber in your joints. It plays an important part in moving nutrients around your body.

Another important role it has is to regulate the water balance in your skin.

Bunny lines Botox treatment

Bunny lines around the nose can be treated with Botox. It is injected under the skin around the nose. Several places are treated to relax the muscles which create bunny lines.

You can have bunny lines treated as a single area. Or you can also treat two other related areas, frown lines and crow’s feet, to make it more effective. As well as more cost effective!

What causes bunny lines?

You’ll notice bunny lines appear when you smile, laugh, or squint your eyes. In your younger years, bunny lines are called ‘dynamic wrinkles’. They appear when you flex the muscles around your nose and disappear when you relax them.

They are wrinkles, just like the rest!

Bunny lines and crow's feet appear when we smile, laugh, or squint our eyes.
Bunny lines

As you age, you lose collagen and elastin. These help your skin bounce back to a flatter surface without lines and wrinkles.

Bunny lines can appear early in life if you spend a lot of time in the sun. Sunshine has a lot of benefits for your wellbeing. But, too much sun, or intense sunshine will damage your skin over time.

Other factors, such as smoking, air pollution, and stress also affect the skin. Leading to permanent or deeper wrinkles and lines.

Too much stress speeds up the break down of collagen and elastin in your skin. When under stress, your body produces the hormone cortisol. This hormone is responsible for the break down of collagen and elastin.

How to prevent bunny lines

You can help to prevent or at least delay bunny lines from forming. I’m not going to tell you to stop smiling, laughing or squinting at things in the distance.

Being happy is good for your skin, body, and mind.

What you can do is regularly check your non expressive face. What I mean is to see if you have tension in parts of the face.

Sometimes, we develop a constant frown. Or slight, but constant, squint. It may not be pronouced, but it will cause muscles to tense and gather the skin into wrinkles or lines.

You may also find tension on other parts of your face. Around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, and the mouth.

Gently smooth the skin around these areas to release the tension. Do this daily. Several times a day would better..

Notice the difference as the muscles relax. Become conscious of when you are creating tension in your face and start to relax.

How much does Botox cost?

The cost Botox treatment for one area of the face is between £100 to £350. Usually treatment involves treating 3 areas of the face. The cost for treating 3 areas can be between £220 to £900!

There will always be exception to the pricing I have given above. There are some factors to be aware of when looking at the price of treatment from different practitioners.

Quality of Botox

There are different types and qualities of Botox produced. The highest quality is more expensive than the rest. The quality of Botox will also determine how effective it is and how long its effects last.

The better the quality of Botox, the longer its effects are likely to last.

I use the best quality Botox available.

Number of areas treated

This depends on the treatment you need. Typically, three areas on the face are treated in a single consultation. This will reduce the overall cost of the treatment.

The cost of treating three areas (12-15 injections) is very cost effective. See my price list.

The treatment includes a follow-up session. I can check to see how the results and if it needs a Botox ‘top-up’. The follow up session and any Botox ‘top-up’ is free.

Experience of the practitioner

Experience of the practitioner is a key part of Botox treatment. Their knowledge and expertise grows with each treatment. They get to know how best to treat different types of skin, lines, and wrinkles.

Botox is classed as a medicine and needs to be prescribed. Meaning, it needs a prescription from a medical doctor or an Independent Prescribing Pharmacist.

The cost of treatment will reflect the expertise of the practitioner, and whether they are able to independently prescribe Botox.

Location of the clinic

Where the treatment clinic is located in the UK also has an influence on the cost. A clinic in the heart of London will have much higher overhead costs.

Thankfully, I am not based in London! You can find me in Clanfield, and covering other parts of Hampshire, including Portsmouth, Waterlooville, Havant, and Petersfield.

I appreciate cost is a big factor, but please do consider what other elements will make your treatment effective.
